Defensive Move: When someone presents a fallacy of ignorance, we need to identify her premise and point out that just because the premise lacks proof does not mean we can correctly draw a certain conclusion.
Slippery Slope
When a premise is followed by a series of increasingly unreasonable consequences, we call this a slippery slope argument.
We know of a certain "dry" city, meaning a person cannot bring alcoholic beverages inside the city limits. Recently, citizens had an opportunity to vote on the matter of whether alcohol should or should not be allowed in the city. The people opposed to having alcohol in the city distributed flyers making their case. They said that if residents allowed alcohol into the city, their neighborhoods would attract less desirable inhabitants, and eventually adult sex shops and strip clubs would open as well.
This group had some strong arguments, but these particular ones actually were quite weak. The group made a slippery slope argument that if "A" happened, then "B", "C", and "D" were sure to follow. There is little to no evidence to support those results. The group had stronger, more reasonable, and less fallacious arguments they could have used, but they went with the slippery slope (and won, we might add!).
Defensive Move: Identify the "if" premise (in this case if we let alcohol into the city) and the final result strip clubs would open) and then explain that the final result need not occur just because of the initial premise. For example, other cities allow alcohol and have never had a strip club open.
